Network Defense Essentials (NDE)

I. Purpose of Class
This class is designed to equip students with the essential knowledge and practical skills
required to defend modern enterprise networks against a wide range of cyber threats. The
curriculum provides a comprehensive foundation in network security principles and prepares
students to implement, manage, and monitor security controls across diverse environments,
including traditional on-premises, cloud, mobile, and IoT infrastructures.
II. Course Objectives
Students who successfully complete this class will be able to do the following:
1. Explain foundational network security principles, essential protocols, and core
concepts of Identity and Access Management (IAM), including access control models
and terminologies
2. Design administrative security controls by interpreting regulatory frameworks,
compliance requirements, and developing policies alongside awareness training
programs
3. Implement physical security measures, including workplace safeguards and
environmental controls, to protect network infrastructure
4. Deploy technical security controls such as network segmentation, firewalls, IDS/IPS,
honeypots, proxy servers, VPNs, SIEM, UBA, and related security software
5. Analyze virtualization concepts, OS security, cloud computing fundamentals, and apply
best practices for securing virtual and cloud environments
6. Evaluate wireless network fundamentals, encryption mechanisms, authentication
methods, and implement measures to secure wireless networks                             7. Assess mobile device threats, connection methods, management concepts, usage
policies, and deploy enterprise-level security solutions and best practices
8. Identify unique security risks in IoT devices, application areas, communication models,
and apply hardening techniques for IoT-enabled environments
9. Utilize cryptographic techniques, including symmetric, asymmetric, and hashing
algorithms, along with tools and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) for secure
communications
10. Monitor data security strategies, including encryption controls, backup and retention,
data loss prevention, network traffic baselining, and detection of suspicious activities
